Digital transformation in healthcare goes well beyond apps, CRM and web portals. The technology carrying the most weight right now is the digital twin. At Inneva Pharma we have taken it a step further.
Through our Virtual Journey project, in collaboration with a Spanish university, we built a clinical digital twin of a well-known hospital, aimed at improving medical training and the humanisation of cancer care. The experience is a technical milestone, and also a shift in how learning and training happen in a clinical setting.
What is a digital twin?
A digital twin is a precise, dynamic virtual representation of a real space, process or object. In healthcare, that means hyper-realistic 3D clinical environments in which real scenarios can be simulated: patient pathways, medical procedures, workflows and doctor-patient communication.
Put another way: a clinical environment you can explore, understand and use as a training or communication tool, without leaving your desk or with a VR headset on.
The case study: Virtual Journey
Virtual Journey is an immersive experience that faithfully reproduces the path of a colon cancer patient, from the first suspicion through to diagnosis and treatment in a real hospital.
The simulator was developed by Inneva Pharma with a Spanish university and hospital, and is built on:
- 3D environments modelled faithfully on the hospital’s own facilities
- Animated characters with lip-sync and realistic facial expression
- Interactive clinical scenarios, translated into several languages
- Real, spatial ambient sound
- First-person interaction, as the patient and as the healthcare professional
The result: a training tool that rehearses clinical skills and also builds communication, empathy and humanisation in oncology.
Why a digital twin changes the rules
Digital twins applied to healthcare make it possible to:
- Simulate real clinical processes with no travel and no risk
- Train soft skills such as empathy, emotional communication and patient handling
- Create immersive experiences that improve retention and awareness
- Adapt the content to different audiences (clinicians, nurses, students, families) and conditions
- Replicate hospitals, consulting rooms or procedures with controlled, scalable investment
And, most importantly, they let you experience what the patient feels at each stage of the care pathway.
Real applications of the digital twin in healthcare
At Inneva Pharma we are applying digital twin technology in:
- Clinical simulators for medical and university training
- Hospital and healthcare onboarding projects
- Supporting material for humanisation campaigns
- Training tools for pharmaceutical companies
- Patient and family education in high-complexity settings
- Communication training with AI and clinical interaction
The potential does not stop there: the same technical architecture adapts to other specialties (cardiology, neurology, gynaecology) and other cancers, with room for generative AI, data analytics and personalisation by profile.
What makes the Inneva Pharma digital twin different
- It is fully realistic and navigable: built on real clinical environments, scanned and modelled by our team.
- It is educational and emotional at once: it teaches knowledge, and it changes how the professional sees the patient.
- It is built by our in-house team of developers, 3D artists, medical scriptwriters, experience designers and VR specialists.
- It has been submitted for digital health innovation funding as a reference project in immersive technology.
- It integrates with our other technology: 3D viewers, clinical escape rooms and AI-driven simulators of the medical visit.
Digital twins are not a passing technology trend. They are a powerful way to change how people learn, train and empathise in healthcare.
At Inneva Pharma we are leading that path with solutions like Virtual Journey, which bring together technology, science and sensitivity.
